 Nahiku, Maui -- A Place Called The Sevens

For three years I lived in Nahiku on the remote east side of Maui island in Hawaii. Nahiku means
"the sevens" in Hawaiian language and refers to the Seven Sisters constellation by which Polynesian
sailors navigated the Pacific Ocean. In ancient times Nahiku was the site of several navigation heiaus
or schools. One summer I worked as a ranch hand -- the hardest job I ever had. Below the ranch cliffs
I caught lobster and fish at night. During the day, I set wire traps for freshwater prawns in the Nahiku Wilderness, where I also hunted wild pigs and collected wild fruit. One friend described my old rented
house as "a bunch of termites holding hands," but I loved the place more than the house I later built
and owned myself on a different island. The Hana Highway offers the most scenic drive in Hawaii as
it winds through 52 miles of lush tropical rainforest.
